Headline finding · measured 2026-09-07
92.9% of US IT providers do not tell you they serve law firms.
Legal is the most-searched IT vertical and the fourth-most-claimed. The useful finding is how few providers say the words at all, and what the ones who do have in common.
of 39,188 US providers name legal as a vertical they serve
n = 39,188 published US providers. 2,796 of them name legal among the verticals they serve. Verticals are on file for 25,388 of the 39,188, so an unknown counts against the share: read 7.1% as "7.1% show us they serve law firms", not as a claim about who takes legal work. Shares within the legal group are quoted against those 2,796. Measured 2026-09-07 in one snapshot.

The published statistic behind this
Cybersecurity is the most common published service among IT providers: 16,425 firms of the 36,575 that list any service at all.
n = 36,575 providers listing at least one service · measured 2026-09-17. The figures on this page are frozen at their own measurement date and are not recomputed from that table.
Services offered prevalence ▸Almost nobody claims it
2,796 of 39,188 published US providers name legal among the verticals they serve. That is 7.1%, which makes legal the fourth-most-claimed vertical on the directory, behind healthcare at 31.9%, finance at 25.1% and nonprofit at 10.1%.
The number to act on is the other one. 36,392 providers do not show us a legal vertical. Some of them certainly do legal work and have simply never written it down, because verticals are on file for 25,388 of the 39,188 firms and a silent site counts against the share here. But that is the buyer's problem too: if a provider has not said it, a firm searching cannot find it.
Among the 2,796 that do say it, the median claims three verticals in total. A legal specialty is usually one line on a list, not a business model.
The firms that say it look different
Providers naming legal are more visible than the directory average on every signal we hold. 1,841 of the 2,796 show a Google rating, or 65.8%, against 44.0% across all 39,188. Their median rated firm carries 10 reviews, against 5 for the directory.
909 of them show at least one certification, or 32.5%, against 15.7% directory-wide. Read that as a floor in both cases — 84.3% of the whole directory does not show us a certification, which is a statement about what is published rather than what is held.
They are not bigger. The median headcount among the 2,404 legal-naming firms that publish one is 8 staff, against 9 for the 29,447 publishers across the directory. Claiming a vertical is a positioning choice available to a six-person shop.
Where they are
The legal group concentrates where the law firms are: California 333, Florida 264, Texas 242, New York 202 and New Jersey 125. Those five states hold 1,166 of the 2,796, or 41.7%.
86 of the 2,796 publish a per-user, per-month rate, which is 3.1% against 2.2% across the directory. Pricing stays hidden in legal IT much as it does everywhere else, so expect to ask.
What this number can't tell you
- ·This measures what providers publish about themselves, not who they actually serve. A firm doing substantial legal work that never names the vertical is counted in the 92.9%.
- ·Verticals are on file for 25,388 of the 39,188 published firms. Every share against the full directory is therefore a floor, and an unknown counts against the share, per the directory's denominator rule.
- ·Vertical labels come from provider sites and are matched to a controlled vocabulary. "Legal" is the tag; a site saying "attorneys" or "law practices" maps to it, and a site saying "professional services" does not.
- ·Ratings and certification shares inside the legal group are quoted against the 2,796, not against the whole directory. The two bases are different and are not comparable to each other without saying which is which.
- ·The comparison between the legal group and the directory is descriptive. Providers with richer sites tend to publish more of everything, so higher rating and certification shares are partly a property of publishing, not of legal competence.
- ·Median headcount is computed over the 2,404 legal-naming firms that publish a headcount, and over the 29,447 directory-wide firms that do. It is not a market average.
What to do about it
- ▸Buying: search the directory by state, then read what a provider names. A shortlist of firms that never mention legal is a shortlist you assembled without the one filter that matters.
- ▸Selling: 7.1% of the market has claimed this vertical in writing. Naming it costs nothing and is the single cheapest way to be findable for it.
