739 of 39,366 published US firms name insurance among their target verticals. n = 39,366 · as of 2026-09-22.

Limitations

  • This measures what providers publish about themselves, not what they operate or who they actually serve. A provider with real agency clients that never names the vertical is counted in the 38,627.
  • Target markets are on file for 25,328 of the 39,366 published firms; 14,038 show no vertical at all. Every share is a floor and an unknown counts against it, per the directory's denominator rule.
  • Vertical labels come from provider sites and are matched to a controlled vocabulary. "Insurance" here means the specific Insurance label. Five related labels each appear once and are excluded because some describe government benefit agencies rather than insurers.
  • The card does not separate carriers, brokerages and independent agencies, because the directory records one insurance token and not which part of the industry a provider sells to. The consultancy reading is inferred from the service mix and firm size, and is an interpretation rather than a measurement.
  • No pricing figure is quoted. Three of the 739 publish a per-user monthly rate, which is not a sample. The directory-wide per-user benchmark lives on the pricing card instead.
  • Median headcount is computed over the 602 of the 739 that publish one, against 31,739 directory-wide. Self-published headcounts are not audited.
  • Service counts are firms naming a token, not revenue or delivery volume. A firm naming ten services is counted in all ten.
  • The Help Desk count of 76 uses the same broader definition as this site's Help Desk card, including equivalent help desk and service desk labels. The other service counts in this card use one specific label. The two are not interchangeable and are labeled where they appear.
  • Rating values are not plotted. Google rating values bunch at the top of their range, so a percentile would mislead; share with a rating and review counts are used instead.
  • Measured from 39,366 published firms on 2026-09-22 in one consistent directory snapshot shared with the engineering card published the same day. Older cards are frozen at earlier totals (39,864 for 2026-09-15, 39,722 for 2026-09-11, 39,351 for 2026-09-03) and were not rebased. A card's total is stated on its own face by design.

What to do with this

  • Buying for an independent agency: do not read "we serve insurance" as a fit. Check whether the provider names managed IT, backup and a help desk, only 158, 95 and 76 of the 739 do, because 404 of them lead with consulting and 148 are 50-person firms sized for carrier projects.
  • Buying for a carrier or large brokerage: this is your short list, and it is unusually senior for the directory, median 15 staff, a quarter above 50, with analytics and core system work already named.
  • Selling: 13 providers in the country name insurance as their only market. A managed IT firm aimed squarely at independent agencies would have almost no visible competition.
