Limitations

  • This measures what providers publish about themselves, not what they operate or who they actually serve. A provider with a deep engineering practice that never names the vertical is counted in the 39,121.
  • Target markets are on file for 25,328 of the 39,366 published firms; 14,038 show no vertical at all. Every share is a floor and an unknown counts against it, per the directory's denominator rule.
  • Vertical labels come from provider sites and are matched to a controlled vocabulary. Engineering here means the specific Engineering label. Seven nearby labels each appear once and are excluded; including all seven would move the count from 245 to at most 252.
  • No pricing figure is quoted in this card. Exactly one of the 245 publishes a per-user monthly rate, which is not a sample. The directory-wide per-user benchmark lives on the pricing card instead.
  • Percentages over 245 firms are coarse: one firm is 0.4 points. Counts are given alongside every share so the reader can see the size of what is being divided.
  • Median headcount is computed over the 166 of the 245 that publish one, against 31,739 directory-wide. Self-published headcounts are not audited.
  • The comparison against legal is a control for whether long vertical lists are an artifact of our extraction. It is not a claim that legal and engineering are otherwise comparable markets.
  • Rating values are not plotted. Google rating values bunch at the top of the range, so a percentile of it would mislead; share-with-a-rating and review counts are used instead.
  • Measured at a base of 39,366 published firms on 2026-09-22, read from one consistent directory snapshot shared with the insurance card published the same day. Older cards are frozen at earlier bases (39,864 for 2026-09-15, 39,722 for 2026-09-11, 39,351 for 2026-09-03) and were not rebased. A card's base is stated on its own face by design.

What to do with this

  • Buying IT for an engineering firm: assume you are hiring a generalist. Ask specifically about CAD workstation support, license server management, large-file and version control, and who carries the compliance load if you sit in a defense supply chain. None of the 245 has published answers to those, so make them answer live.
  • Selling into engineering: 0.6% of the directory names this market and none of them names it alone. Naming it by itself, with two paragraphs of specifics, would make a provider the most visible firm in the category we can see.
